Early Obstetric Scan

About the Scan

What is an Early Obstetric Scan?

An early obstetric scan, also called a viability scan or dating scan, is the first ultrasound done in early pregnancy. It is usually performed between 6 and 11 weeks. The scan confirms that the pregnancy is growing inside the uterus, checks the fetal heartbeat, counts the number of embryos and gives you an accurate expected due date.

At ASHA Sonography in Hadapsar, this scan is performed by Dr. Devashree Salunkhe, a Consultant Radiologist and Sonologist with FMF UK certification and advanced training in fetal medicine. Every scan is done on high resolution ultrasound equipment with a clear, easy to understand report handed to you the same day.

How the scan is performed

Two approaches, chosen based on the weeks of pregnancy and your comfort.

Transabdominal Scan (TAS)

A small probe is moved gently over your lower abdomen with water based gel. The standard approach from around 8 weeks onwards.

Transvaginal Scan (TVS)

A slim, sterile covered probe gives a sharper view of very early pregnancies. Safe, painless and best before 8 weeks. A female attendant is always present.

Is an early pregnancy scan safe?

Yes. Diagnostic ultrasound has been used in pregnancy for over 40 years and has an excellent safety record. It uses sound waves, not radiation. Both abdominal and transvaginal scans are completely safe for you and your baby when performed by a trained radiologist. At ASHA Sonography we follow ALARA principles, using the lowest ultrasound exposure required for a clear, accurate result.
