About the Scan

What is an NT Scan?

An NT scan, also called a Nuchal Translucency scan or NT/NB scan, is a first trimester ultrasound performed between 12 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. It measures the thin layer of fluid at the back of the baby’s neck, known as the nuchal translucency. When this measurement is higher than expected, it can indicate an increased risk of chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13).

At ASHA Sonography, one of the best NT scan centres in Pune, every scan is performed by a qualified NT scan doctor using high resolution ultrasound equipment, following the strict measurement protocols set by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), UK. This ensures your result is accurate, reliable and supported by same day expert counselling at our best radiology clinic in Pune, India.

When Should You Get the NT Scan?

The NT scan must be completed between 12 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. After 13 weeks 6 days the fluid at the back of the baby’s neck is naturally absorbed, and the measurement is no longer accurate. The ideal window is when the baby’s crown rump length (CRL) is between 45 mm and 84 mm.

What the NT Scan Checks

At ASHA Sonography, one of the best NT scan centres in Pune, every scan is performed by a qualified NT scan doctor using high resolution ultrasound equipment, following the strict measurement protocols set by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), UK. What is Checked Why It Matters
Nuchal Translucency (NT) thickness Screens for Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, Trisomy 13
Nasal Bone Assessment Absence of nasal bone is a soft marker for chromosomal anomalies
Fetal Heart Rate Confirms viability and normal cardiac rhythm
Crown Rump Length (CRL) Confirms gestational age and due date accurately
Basic Fetal Anatomy Survey Head, spine, limbs, abdomen checked for major structural concerns
Number of Fetuses Detects twin or higher order pregnancies early
Placenta Location Identifies any placental concerns at this stage

NT Scan with Double Marker Test

For higher screening accuracy, the NT scan is often combined with the Double Marker test (also called First Trimester Combined Screening). The Double Marker is a blood test that measures two hormones: free beta hCG and PAPP-A. Together with the NT measurement and your age, the combined result gives a more precise risk figure for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions. The NT scan can also be combined with NIPT (Non Invasive Prenatal Testing) for those who prefer this option.

At ASHA Sonography we co-ordinate with trusted pathology laboratories so that you can complete both the NT scan and the blood test conveniently. Ask us about same day co-ordination when you book.

How the NT Scan is Performed

The NT scan is performed using one of two methods, chosen based on the position of the baby and the weeks of pregnancy.

Transabdominal Scan (TAS)

A probe is moved gently over the abdomen with water based gel. This is the standard approach from around 12 weeks onwards.

Transvaginal Scan (TVS)

A slim sterile covered probe provides a sharper view when the baby is not ideally positioned. Safe, painless and done with a female attendant present.

Is the NT Scan Safe?

Yes. The NT scan is a non-invasive ultrasound that uses high frequency sound waves and no radiation. It is completely safe for both mother and baby. At ASHA Sonography we follow the ALARA principle, using the minimum ultrasound exposure needed to obtain a clear and accurate measurement. The scan has been performed safely in millions of pregnancies worldwide for over three decades.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

At how many weeks should I do the NT scan in Pune?

The NT scan must be done between 12 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days. Beyond 13 weeks 6 days the fluid behind the baby’s neck is absorbed and the measurement is no longer valid. If you are unsure of your exact weeks, an early obstetric scan can confirm your gestational age first.

Yes. NT scan and nuchal translucency scan refer to the same test. NT stands for Nuchal Translucency, which is the fluid space at the back of the baby’s neck that is measured during the scan.

No. The NT scan is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. It gives a risk estimate. If the risk is found to be higher than expected, further testing such as NIPT (Non Invasive Prenatal Testing) or amniocentesis can provide a definitive diagnosis. Our NT scan doctor at ASHA Sonography, one of the best radiology clinics in Pune, will explain your result clearly and guide you on the next steps.

Yes, combining the NT scan with the Double Marker blood test significantly improves the accuracy of Down syndrome screening. The combined first trimester screen (NT plus PAPP-A and free beta hCG) detects around 90 percent of Down syndrome cases. Alternatively, the NT scan can be combined with NIPT for those who prefer this option. We recommend discussing this with your gynaecologist before your appointment.

A full bladder is not required for the NT scan. Our NT scan doctor will use whichever method, transabdominal or transvaginal, gives the clearest measurement on the day.

The scan itself takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the baby’s position. You will receive your printed report with images before leaving the clinic on the same day.

Yes. Your partner or a family member is welcome to be present in the scan room.

Yes. As required under the Indian PCPNDT Act, a prescription from a registered medical practitioner is mandatory for any obstetric ultrasound scan in India. Please carry your gynaecologist’s prescription when you visit.

No. The transabdominal scan is completely painless. If a transvaginal scan is needed, the probe is slim, covered with a sterile sheath and gently placed. Most patients feel only mild pressure. A female attendant is always present.

An increased NT measurement does not confirm a problem. It means the risk is higher and further testing is advised. Our expert NT scan doctor in Pune will explain the measurement, what it means for your pregnancy, and the available options such as NIPT, amniocentesis or a referral to a fetal medicine specialist. You will leave our radiology clinic in Pune with a clear plan, not just a number.

How to Choose the Best NT Scan Centre in Pune

With many diagnostic centres and sonography clinics offering NT scans across Pune, it can be difficult to know which one to trust for this important first trimester screening. Not all centres follow the same protocols or have the same level of expertise. Here is what to look for when selecting the best NT scan centre in Pune for your pregnancy.

What to Check Why It Matters
FMF Certified NT Scan Doctor FMF (Fetal Medicine Foundation) certification ensures the sonologist follows internationally accepted measurement protocols, improving the reliability of your NT scan results.
Scan Done by a Specialist Doctor At many NT scan clinics, scans may be performed by technicians. For accurate nuchal translucency measurement, ensure a qualified Radiologist or Sonologist conducts the scan personally.
High Resolution Ultrasound Equipment Accurate NT measurements depend on image quality. Choose a centre that uses modern high-resolution ultrasound machines rather than outdated equipment.
Same Day Detailed Report You should receive a comprehensive report with scan images on the same day, helping reduce unnecessary stress and waiting time.
Post Scan Counselling The best NT scan specialists explain the findings, discuss whether additional tests are required, and answer any concerns you may have.
PCPNDT Registered Clinic Every NT scan centre must be registered under the PCPNDT Act. The clinic should also request your gynaecologist's prescription, which is legally required in India.

At ASHA Sonography, Hadapsar, every one of these criteria is met. Our FMF UK certified NT scan doctor performs every scan personally and provides same day reports with detailed counselling. Patients searching for the best NT scan centre in Pune visit us from Magarpatta, Mundhwa, Kharadi, Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar and many other parts of Pune specifically because of the quality and care we offer at our radiology clinic in Pune, India.

NT Scan Cost in Pune: What to Keep in Mind

Many expecting parents search for NT scan prices in Pune and compare costs across clinics. While affordability matters, the NT scan is one of the most technique dependent ultrasound tests in pregnancy. The accuracy of your result depends almost entirely on the skill of the sonologist performing the scan and the quality of the equipment used, not on the price you pay.

A scan done at a low cost NT scan centre in Pune by an uncertified technician on basic equipment can miss key findings or give an inaccurate NT measurement, leading to unnecessary anxiety or a missed high risk result. When it comes to your baby’s chromosomal screening, the quality of the scan matters far more than the cost.

At ASHA Sonography we keep our fees transparent and reasonable. Our priority is to give every patient an accurate result, a clear explanation and the confidence to make informed decisions about their pregnancy. Contact us to know about the current NT scan fees at our clinic in Hadapsar, Pune.
